Angel's BBQ
No trip to the South is complete without at least attempting to explore the barbecue options wherever you’re staying. One of the options in central Savannah was Angel’s BBQ, a relatively hidden gem on Oglethorpe Lane.
Angels BBQ was established by Andy & Aileen Trice in 2005 and serves lunchtimes from Tuesday to Saturday. Although there are posted opening hours if the barbecue for the day is done then they close early.

The restaurant is tiny with a chalked menu above the serving hatch part of the galley kitchen. There are three tables if you want to eat in but it only adds up to about 10 seats total. Angel’s BBQ appeared on Man vs Food Nation where the challenge was to eat a 1 lb pork BBQ sandwich laced with voodoo juice sauce. Andy develops his own sauces in-house and the voodoo juice is a hot sauce based around ghost peppers. One wall in the restaurant is dedicated to photos of those who have successfully completed the challenge.
The menu is brief with a choice of chicken, pork or brisket in a sandwich or platter. There is a veggie option of Faux Q. Sides include BBQ beans, coleslaw, mac & cheese, fries and collard greens with peanuts. The chicken had sold out by the time we arrived so it was a choice between pork and brisket for the others. For me it was a choice between the pork sandwich and the pork platter. Going for the platter meant that I could have BBQ beans and fries. It also came with a slice of white bread and a pickle all served in a polystyrene takeaway container. The bread wasn’t needed and the fries were merely okay. The BBQ beans had a strong sweet molasses flavour. But what of the pork? Delicious. The juicy meat was packed full of flavour with taste similar to crackling in places. Things didn’t end there though. The table had bottles of other in-house sauces and the vinegar-based Angel Drops sauce stirred through the pork enhanced it even further.
Angel’s BBQ was a no-frills eating place but the flavour of the pork would easily have me going back for more even though the supporting sides fell well short of its standard. As we finished lunch I ordered a pound of pork to go and we had the pleasure of eating another portion once we’d returned to New York. I’d love to try the other meats and sides if I ever get the chance for a return visit.
